Pelerin Syrah 2006

Pelerin is the French word for pilgrim. The motif represents an old world traveler on his humble journey. Owner/winemakers Chris and Cathy Weidemann say it is emblematic of their quest to produce top-level wines from the Santa Lucia Highlands appellation.

The 2006 Monterey Syrah is 100% Syrah, and the fruit is sourced from the both the organically grown Mesa del Sol Vineyard in Arroyo Seco (43%), and from Paraiso Vineyard on Santa Lucia Highlands (57%). Being that Mesa del Sol is quite a warm, protected location and Paraiso is a considerably cooler site, the wine is infused with the characters of the two appellations into a fruit-forward, but relatively complex Syrah that showcases Monterey's fine overall climate for the variety.

The 2006 Monterey Syrah shows a fine balance between upfront dark berry fruit, lingering peppery spice, mocha, mushroom, coffee and caramelized oak. The primary flavors of plums, blackberries, earth and vanilla are woven together in an elegant texture. Classic cool climate Syrah spice notes show both in the wine's aromas and on the finish.
