Ridge Monte Bello Red Wine California 2007

Monte Bello has often been called America's First Growth, as it is considered one of the finest domestic examples of a classic Bordeaux blend in which cabernet sauvignon dominates.

Much celebrated winemaker Paul Draper began at Ridge in 1969, but the rich history of this spot goes much farther back-- an Italian doctor purchased the land in the Santa Cruz Mountains and first planted vines back in1886.

The Monte Bello Vineyard, located only 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, California's coolest cabernet producing area. The vineyard ranges from 1300 to 2700 ft. in elevation and is composed of unique green stone and clay soils layered over decomposing limestone.

The high-altitude vineyards ripen late, producing classic, elegant wines with aromatic complexity, structure and an impression of intensity without excess weight. Only the best is culled from the vineyard to go into the Ridge Monte Bello.

Ridge's iconic Monte Bello Proprietary Red (no longer called Cabernet Sauvignon) is one of the candidates for the longest-lived Bordeaux blend made in California. Even vintages from the late sixties and early seventies are still vibrant wines.

The 2007 Monte Bello is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. This is classic Monte Bello-dark fruit, firm tannins, and lively acidity. Attractive aromas of incense, red and black currants, spice, cigar box, and forest floor. Full-bodied, elegant and persistent, this is most interesting on the finish, where the flavors are long and lingering with currants, ripe strawberries and black pepper. This is still young and needs a minimum of five years of bottle age.

モンテ・ベロはアメリカのファースト・グロース（プレミエ・クリュ）。クラッシックなボルドースタイルのワイン（カベルネ・ソービニオンを主にしてブレンドしたもの）としてはアメリカ有数。著名醸造家ポール・ドレイパー（Paul Draper）氏がリッジ・ビンヤードでワイン作りを始めたのは1969年のことであるが、当地の歴史は、一人のイタリア人医師がサンタ・クルーズ・マウンテン山地に土地を購入しブドウを栽植した1886年にまでさかのぼる。ビンヤードは太平洋からわずかに15マイル。サンタ・クルーズ・マウンテン地区の一部で、カベルネを生産する地としてはカリフォルニアで一番涼しい。標高1300から2700フィートに渡るビンヤードは、石灰岩地層をグリーン・ストンの混ざった粘土の表土が覆う特異な土壌。高山部でじっくりと時間をかけて成熟したブドウは、複雑で骨組みがしっかりとしていて凝縮感に優れた、しかも、余分な重さを感じさない、クラッシックでエレガントなワインとなる。ビンヤードから選果された最上のブドウのみがリッジ・モンテ・ベロになる。リッジ・ビンヤードを象徴するモンテ・ベロ・プロプリエタリー・レッド（カベルネ・ソービニヨンとは呼ばない）はカリフォルニア産のボルドースタイルのワインとしては最長期熟成型の代表。1960年代や1970年初期ヴィンテージでさえいまだに活気がある。2007年ヴィンテージはカベルネ・ソービニヨン79%にメルロー10%、プティ・ヴェルド9%、カベルネ・フラン2%をブレンド。色の濃いフルーツ、しっかりしたタンニンに生き生きした酸味というクラッシックなスタイル。香りはインセンスやカシス（赤や黒）、スパイス、シガーボックス、林床などを思わせ魅力的。フルボディーでエレガント。余韻は印象的でスグリや熟したイチゴ、黒胡椒の風味がいつまでも続く。少なくともあと5年は寝かせ熟成を待つ必要がある。ワイン評論界の第一人者ロバート・パーカー（Robert Parker）氏の評価は92点。
